Château de Versailles
A classic escape is the Château de Versailles. Less than one hour and a half away from QUARTIER LIBRE**** with RER C or Train L from gare Saint-Lazare. Superb and unique, it concentrates the majesty of the “Roi Soleil” and France at its most classical period. The ticket office is very well organized but don’t hesitate to book in advance. Once in Versailles, check-out “Les grandes eaux” (Fountains shows), the programmation of the Opera and the Potager du Roi (Kitchen Garden of the King) which is now the best school of gardening. Info.
Giverny
Also Classic and less than two hours away by train from gare Saint Lazare, Giverny is the headquarters of the impressionist painters, and the house of Monet is a must. If you want to get off the beaten paths, try the Musée des Impressionnismes, which is also in Giverny and deals with contemporary art. These days, the exhibit Monet/Rothko is a must! Info.
Domain of Sceaux
Closer and more confidential, the Orange Garden from Sceaux is a little garden of eden only one hour away. Reachable within a fews stations of RER B, it has all the quare dimensions of the perfect “Jardin à la française” and is the perfect place for a picnic. It is also a place where you will have a rich musical programmation. You will listen to Rover, Erik Truffaz or encore Ink at the Sceaux Jazz Festival at the new Festival to be held at the end of June. Info.
