Hidden Montmartre

At QUARTIER LIBRE**** we love to make you discover quiet and not touristy walks. Montmartre is maybe overcrowded, but you can still feel the vibe of its artistic past in these four spots.

Bateau-Lavoir

Le Bateau-Lavoir was the residence of poor artists in the early 19th century. In 1907, Pablo Picasso painted in this place “Les Demoiselles d’Avignon”, which is known as the first cubism painting. The Bateau-Lavoir was named after because of the precarious living conditions with the occupants piled up on each other, as in a boat. Amedeo Modigliani, Henri Matisse, Constantin Brâncuși, Georges Braque, Fernand Léger, André Derain or Guillaume Apollinaire lived there. Today, 25 artists’ studios are located at 13-13 bis place Émile-Goudeau. Visit only upon reservation. Info.

Cinéma Studio 28

Opened in 1928, the Cinéma Studio 28 is one of the oldest cinemas in Paris, but it is still in operation. Its garden-café has a fresco dedicated to the cinema. It is still one of the most emblematic places of Montmartre’s life and has been featured in the famous film “The fabulous destiny of Amélie Poulain”. 10 Rue Tholozé, 75018 Paris. Info.

Villa Léandre

The Villa Léandre is a delightful dead-end street located a few blocks from Place Dalida, with pastel villas, well away from the hustle and bustle of the Butte… It attracts photographers and strollers in search of a Paris of heterogeneous charm. The Anglo-Norman style houses are passed down from generation to generation. Villa Léandre, 23 ter avenue Junot 75018 Paris

Cité Véron

Nestled between the districts of Pigalle and Montmartre, the Cité Véron is the symbol of the old Pigalle and its sulfurous reputation. It could almost go unnoticed without the blue and white enameled plaque which surmounts the passage. Boris Vian was seduced by the passage and settled there in 1953 where wrote the Arrache-Coeur and other famous songs. He was followed by his friend Jacques Prévert, who also settled there in 1954. Cité Véron, 94 boulevard de Clichy, 75018 Paris

Enjoy your peaceful and secret walk of Montmartre before coming back, few steps away, to your QUARTIER LIBRE**** cozy Parisian apartment !
